SUMMARY:(note: Maria De Barros @ Yoshi's Oakland)
DESCRIPTION:SF *Brazilian* Portuguese Language (and dancing!) Meetups\n\nMa
 ria De Barros\n'Cape Verdean Chanteuse'\n\n8pm & 10pm shows $20\n \nCape Ve
rdean chanteuse Maria de Barros invites us into her culture’s joyful musica
l tradition with her new album DANÇA MA MI\, (Dance With Me).\n\n“This albu
m is filled with romance\,” she mentions. On her first album\, NHA MUNDO (M
y World)\, which received wide-spread acclaim\, de Barros sang about the be
auty of Cabo Verde and a longing for the island. All of the songs on DANÇA
are filled with stories of love and romance. Amor Luz is a tribute to a wom
an in love\; Espaço Infinito tells of a love lost\; Rosinha waits patiently
for her beloved to return and marry her\; while the love for Cabo Verde it
self shines on Um Tem Um Amor. "The stories told in the songs are poetic de
scription of real and profound human emotions that are not just felt by Cab
o Verdeans\, but by the rest of the world\," she adds.\n\nIn addition to th
e African and Latin flavored coladeiras and bluesy mornas common to her cul
ture’s music\, de Barros introduces another intoxicating rhythm\, the funan
 a. “This rhythm is driven by an instrument called a ferro\, which is simply
a piece of metal played with a knife\,” she explains. Undeniably danceable
and joyful\, both rhythm and instrument can be heard on Pazinho Laxa and S
ol di Manha.\nThrough song\, de Barros expresses the important influence th
at French culture and music had on her own life growing up in West Africa w
 ith the coladeira-tinged Caresse Moi\, a French-Caribbean song\, originally
sung by Marijosé Alie. In fact\, this welcome to de Barros’ musical world
is an intriguing geography lesson. A native of Dakar\, Senegal\, de Barros
lived the first 13 years of her life in Nouackchott\, Mauritania in northwe
st Africa. Her creative heart\, however\, lies in the culturally rich Cabo
Verde\, a former Portuguese colony located 350 miles off the coast of Seneg
al\, the birthplace of her parents.\n\nThe oldest of five children\, de Bar
ros moved with her family as a teenager to Providence\, Rhode Island\, wher
e her grandparents lived. Then as now\, New England had many immigrant comm
unities from Cabo Verde\, and the teen singer performed with many bands fea
turing compatriots from the homeland. Later\, de Barros married and moved t
o Los Angeles\, which exposed her to a potpourri of rhythms and enriched he
r musical experience. There she developed a love for Latin music\, and soon
thereafter started singing in Spanish\, one of the six languages that de B
arros speaks. At the same time\, de Barros continued to perform on both coa
sts with Cape Verdean musicians.\n\nSince the release of her first album “N
ha Mundo” in 2003\, Maria has been very well received in several renowned f
estivals and venues in the United States\, Canada\, Europe\, Mexico\, Brazi
l\, Caribbean Islands\, and Cape Verde. In 2006\, Maria received the Miria
m Makeba Music Award for Excellence in Music. In January 2008\, Maria rece
ived the highest honor given to a Cape Verdean artist by the Government of
Cape Verde Ministry of Culture. She received the Certificate of Cultural M
erit for her contribution to the traditional music and culture of Cape Verd
e in her homeland and all over the world. Maria’s picture is now in the Pa
lace of Culture in Praia (Cape Verde) alongside the greats of Cape Verde’s
music\, such as Cesaria Evora.\nMaria’s music has been featured in several
compilations\, including Putumayo’s “World Reggae” and “Women of Africa\,”
“Listen Here – Volume 1” and “Songs of the Siren: Irresistible Voices” by
Starbucks\, World Voices Vol. 5 released by Blue Flame Records\, and Maria’
s voice was featured on “Miles to Miles” by Jason Miles. Her composition “R
eggadera” from her upcoming CD “MORABEZA” was featured on HBO’s hit show “E
ntourage.”\n\nGrammy® recipient Cesaria Evora\, the “barefoot diva”\, helpe
d to place the music of Cape Verde on worldwide audiences’ musical map. Ev
ora’s ongoing encouragement led to her god-daughter fashioning her own live
ly and vivacious interpretation of Cape Verdean music. Together\, Evora — t
he Queen of the Mornas — and de Barros — Queen of the Coladeiras — paint a
complete musical picture of this tradition-rich land.\n\nThe same great ens
emble who joined de Barros on NHA MUNDO return for DANÇA MA MI\, including
producing team: Danny Luchansky\, bassist Djim Job\, and drummer Kalú Monte
iro.\n\nMaria de Barros’ new release MORABEZA is due out next year!
                 \nCabo Verde is jubilant!\n\nSan Francisco\, CA 94101 - US
