"Quilombo Country" Screening at San Francisco Black Film Festival
DATE: Saturday June 16
TIME: 12:00 PM
PRICE: $10.00
Location: Museum of the African Diaspora
685 Mission Street, San Francisco

"Quilombo Country," the new documentary narrated by Chuck D* about
communities founded by escaped and rebellious slaves in Brazil, will hold its
Northern California premiere on Saturday, June 16th at noon at the Museum of the African
Diaspora. The director, Leonard Abrams, will take questions after the screening.

Brazil, once the world's largest slave colony, was a brutal and deadly
place for millions of Africans. But many thousands escaped and rebelled,
creating their own communities in Brazil's untamed hinterland. Largely unknown to
the outside world, today these communities, known as quilombos, struggle
to preserve a rich heritage born of resistance to oppression.

"Quilombo Country" ("Quilombo" is an Angolan word meaning "encampment")
includes rare footage of syncretic Umbanda and Pajelanca ceremonies;
Tambor de Crioula, Carimbo and Boi Bumba drum and dance celebrations;
and Festivals of the Mast.

73 minutes * Digital Video * Portuguese with English subtitles and narration

Oi galera--

We have the great opportunity of hitting up the SF International Film Festival! Come view an up-and-coming filmmaker Ricardo Elias' latest work, "Os 12 Trabalhos" ("The 12 Works") this coming Monday, April 30 at 7pm. Take in a movie you wouldn't otherwise be able to catch here in the US, and see if you can avoid reading those subtitles!

Note that these tickets may get sold out, so if you RSVP yes, make sure to buy them in advance! According to the SFFIF site, you may order tickets by going to the theatre (Kabuki Cinema, in Japantown) or phoning 925-866-9559, Daily, 9:00 am ? 5:00 pm. Tickets are $12.

Abracos,
Jason

Description of the film:

"City of God and Bus 174 (SFIFF 2003) gripped viewers with their chronicling of the poverty, violence, injustice, drug addiction, abuse and police brutality that two million homeless children endure daily in the urban jungle of São Paulo. The equally exciting and eloquent The 12 Labors could be seen as a prequel to Bus 174. "Neighborhoods denote classes, streets denote who you are. Man, depending on where you were born, your story is written even before it starts." Thus begins the account of 18-year-old Heracles, just out of reform school. On his first day as a motorcycle courier, Heracles?like his Greek demigod namesake?must overcome 12 hurdles of increasing difficulty. Fortunately, he receives the help of sympathetic characters who, much like mythic deities, appear when he most needs assistance. Heracles? struggles render him a faithful embodiment of what the Greeks called pathos, the experience of virtuous struggle and suffering that leads to self-respect, confidence and a sense of possibility, if not fame or immortality. In a metropolis where congested arteries run thick with 300,000 motorcycle delivery boys, Heracles? own existence reflects the city?s chaos and its youth in crisis. The film?s lyrical. omniscient voice-over narrative counterpoints the hip inner-city soundtrack and energy-infused urban cinematography. Young thespian Sidney Santiago, who deservedly won the Best Actor Award at last year?s Rio de Janeiro International Film Festival, perfectly personifies the somber Heracles, whose imagination, poetic sensitivity and artistic talent may be his salvation."

Oi galera--

I've had some unexpected major life events occur lately, and so I won't be around to host on Monday as planned (this is also why there haven't been details posted, I haven't gotten around to this until now). As such, unless someone else specifically wants to host, I'm changing it to the following Monday, April 23.

That said, have you eaten some farofa, or dende, or some good ol' fashioned bacalhau lately? Do you even know what those things are?

If your answer to either was no, then come and get some dinner! Canto do Brasil is a solid joint for moqueca, feijoada, and other treats. If you have saudades for some good cooking to bring you back, or if you've never tried traditional Brasilian cooking, then come on down and grub out! It's a little pricey, so it's totally cool to eat before you come out and just hang or grab drinks. Find out more:

Canto do Brasil site: http://www.cantodobrasil.com/

It's located near the corner of Franklin and Oak, right near where Van Ness meets Market--so plenty of options for getting there without a car!

That said, I NEED RSVPs! If you are interested in coming, RSVP by next weekend (April 21), and I'll contact the restaurant to make a reservation--and with any luck, work out a group discount if there's enough of us. And of course, email me if you have any questions.

Abracos,
Jason

Let's pray for something not quite so breezy and cool this Sunday! As usual, we'll be in Dolores Park at 2pm onward. Bring instruments if you can, and of course, ALL LEVELS WELCOME!

Look for us on the uphill side of the park between 19th & 20th Streets, near the cluster of palm trees. I wear bright yellow capoeira pants, it's not hard to spot them from a mile out.

And...PLEASE RSVP! Last week, there just weren't enough RSVPs to make a roda, so I cancelled the event and informed those who had RSVP'd. I hope no one showed up looking for us...if so, then RSVP this time to avoid it happening again!

Jason

We've been recovering from carnaval for some time now, and porra!--it's time to meet up again

Porra?

That's right, get ready to dust off your memory and reach back for GIRIA--the slang, the idioms, and other silly sayings they don't teach you in a class. I'll bring a notebook full of all the strange and wonderful sayings I picked up in Brazil; while you needn't go to such excess, come with your favorite couple of expressions in mind!

As always, all levels are welcome (though I hope not to be the highest-level speaker for this one). Hang out and have a good time reviving your Portuguese. Sacou?

Make sure to RSVP! Come give your Portuguese the burst of new vocabulary it needs.

Abracos,
Jason

Third time's a charm--once again, come and share the Brazilian music you have in your iPod and CD collections. Bring your favorite music and trade with others; you may just discover your favorite new band! (And note: other lusophone music welcome! Portugal, Mozambique, Sao Tome, Guinea-Bissau--it's all good.) If you don't have music to bring, come and get some anyway, and tell us about your favorite tunes.

If someone else can bring another set of speakers and a CD player, we'll be able to get two stations running simultaneously--more music! I'm going to bring my computer, so make sure to bring blank CDs if you want to trade music.

We'll start at 7pm at Philz Coffee (24th & Folsom); generally, Philz closes between 8:30 and 9pm. Make sure to RSVP!

Oi galera--

Shake off that winter cold and rain! This Thursday there's a great Afro-Brasilian dance class at Oberlin Dance Collective's school in the Mission. I went last week, and it was the highlight of my week--high-energy traditional dancing and parade samba with live drumming that covers you in sweat and leaves you grinning. Granted, there's not too much chance for conversation, but it's well worth it if you can make it out and have been meaning to shake it during these carnaval times.

The class is $12 for a drop-in and runs from 8:00p - 9:30p. You should wear gym clothing and bring a change of clothes; there are changing rooms and showers available in ODC's excellent facility. Afterward we'll catch our breath and grab drinks nearby.

Don't worry if you've never done it before--I was the slowest one in there last time, but I was still able to follow it and had a great time. The folks there are friendly too--though the male contingent is rather small (so guys, give me some support, yeah?). Try something new and energizing and come out! If you have any questions, drop me an email.

Oi Galera!

We've had a great series of conversation nights and music exchanges; now it's time to get down. The Elbo Room in the Mission has Brazilian music every Tuesday, and this coming Tuesday, January 30th they feature Boca do Rio (http://www.bocadorio.com/), who keep things bumpin' with a fusion of Brazilian styles (samba, pagode) and jazz/funk, sometimes in Portuguese and sometimes in English. They're one of the top acts in the Bay Area, so come see what it's about.

The show is $7, but thankfully the Elbo Room bar downstairs never has a cover, so show up at 9:45pm before the show if you just want to hang out. The caipirinhas are reasonable :)

Make sure to RSVP!

Abraco,
Jason

PS: Thanks to everyone who came to Philz for the bate papo, it was great! Thank you for all the ideas to help make several events a month. If ANYONE wants to help out by hosting an event at their house, or organizing one themselves, just drop me an email at jason@burwen.com!

Oi galera!

The holidays have come and gone, and it's a new year--did you resolve to practice your Portuguese more often, or meet others who have gone to/lived in Brasil? If so, let's get rolling with a straight up bate-papo night. Come out and meet others Portuguese speakers and get the best cup of coffee in town at Philz on 24th & Folsom! All levels welcome; I'll be there at 7, they close at 8:30.

Besides just hanging out, I also want to generate some ideas for future events. I look forward to doing Portuguese meetups at least twice a month, hopefully even once a week. There's enough people on the list that even if 5% show up each time, that's a good sized group for practice. Plus, I want to get dancing more. But I'll need your help--so come out and toss around some ideas too.

This year, be on the lookout for:
--more dancing (samba, forro, rock)
--brasilian cultural activities (capoeira, afro-brasilian dance)
--cooking nights
--movie nights
--more music swaps
--other Lusophone events (from portugal, mozambique, sao tome, etc)
--and of course, Carnaval!

Make sure to RSVP, and catch you soon!

Jason

Oi galera!

Our last meetup was great--I ended up with some great new tunes for the road trip I took this weekend. We had so much music and so little time, heck, let's do it again! That's right, come and share the Brazilian music we have in our iPods and CD collections. Bring your favorite music and trade with others; have something new to listen to during those holiday trips! (And note: other lusophone music welcome! Portugal, Mozambique, Sao Tome, Guinea-Bissau--it's all good!)

This time, if someone else can bring another set of speakers and a CD player, we'll be able to get two stations running simultaneously--more music! I'm going to bring my computer, so make sure to bring blank CDs if you want to trade music.

*Se alguem pudesse trazer outras caixas de som e um CD player, a gente pode tocar mais musica! Eu vou trazer minha computadora, faz seguro trazer CDs em branco se voce quiser trocar muscias!*

It worked last time, so we'll meet at the Mission Creek Cafe (Valencia between 20th and 21st) again. ***WE'LL BE IN THE BACK ROOM!***, since it is easier for us to play music there without interrupting others in the cafe. Also, the cafe closes at 9pm, come before then!

*Funcionou a ultima vez...vamos unir de novo ao Mission Creek Cafe (Valencia entre ruas 20 e 21). ***VAMOS ESTAR NO FUNDO!***, porque e mais facil tocar musica la sem estar chateando. Tambem, Mission Creek Cafe fecha as 9 na noite, venha antes la!
