Oi gente-- Tomorrow is the opening night of the Contemporary Brazilian Art exhibit at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, and Grupo Falso Baiano will be playing! The music will for sure be great, the art will certainly be interesting, and presumably the crowd will be speaking Portuguese. I know it's last minute, but it'd be a delight to meet up with y'all. Com certeza, a gente vai falar portugues tambem--venha practicar com outros falantes enquanto divertir-se com arte, musica, e bebidas. (And yes, this will be the first time I'm actually getting to a Meetup--come meet your mysterious absentee group organizer ;) Details are below. Just showing up will be fine, but if you RSVP I'll look for you. I'll be wearing a Meetup badge so that you can find me in the crowds! Abracos, Jason ========== http://www.ybca.org/ tickets/production/v iew.aspx?id=9821 Wed, Nov 4, 8–11 pm $12 in advance, $15 at the door FREE for YBCA Members and a guest Celebrate the art, music and spirit of the tropics with Yerba Buena Center for the Arts! Join YBCA for the opening of its new exhibition, When Lives Become Form: Contemporary Brazilian Art, 1960s to the Present, with a party featuring Brazilian music, Campari cocktails and the fabulous YBCA crowd. Entertainment includes the Marcos Silva Ensemble featuring Rio-born renowned pianist Marcos Silva in a musical fusion of Tropicália with contemporary Brazilian jazz, and Grupo Falso Baiano, an ensemble of musicians who blend joyous Brazilian choro (considered the first pop music of Brazil) with modern influences such as jazz and samba. When Lives Become Form: Contemporary Brazilian Art, 1960s to the Present (Nov 5, 2009-Jan 31, 2010) celebrates Brazil’s creative vitality through the works of artists, fashion designers and architects. The exhibition highlights artists and creators who were part of, or inspired by, “Tropicália”—an artistic movement which arose in Brazil during the 1960s around the “originality of the culture of people who live in the tropics.”

Many feel that the likes of Irlan Santos da Silva and Isabela Coracy, two poor black kids from the favelas, don't belong in the elitist world of ballet. Despite the constant prejudice and doubt, both are determined to follow their ambitions. With their incredible talent (beautifully and excitingly captured on film), supportive parents, and tough mentor, can they make it? Meet Up with Zezinho outside the theater @ 4:30 This film also screens Tue, Oct 27 @ 7:00 PM $11 Presale

Carlos Saura (Portugal/Spain 2007) Like the blues, fado, with its strummed guitars and plucked mandolins, can be lively or poignant as it contemplates unrequited love, homesickness and the general malaise of being down on your luck. As with his other musical films like Sevillanas (SFIFF 1993), Iberia (SFIFF 2006), Flamenco and Tango, Carlos Saura brings together a range of the finest practitioners of the art, including Mariza, Camané, Carlos do Carmo and Chico Buarque. Adding artists from Mozambique, Brazil and Cabo Verde, Saura takes us down unforgettable side streets, leavening the traditional with the talents of Lila Downs, Caetano Veloso and others. He has a genius for using the camera to bring new dimensions to sound, motion, color and feeling with his ever-inventive staging of performances, enriched by costuming, backgrounds, projections and disarming closeups. The spirit of the port city of Lisbon, Portugal, the place that gave birth to fado, is invoked with location shooting, vintage footage and other graphic imagery, elements new to the Saura musical film canon. “I hope that this film will serve to launch fados into the world,” says Saura, who celebrates over 50 years of making films with one of his most polished, inspired and satisfying efforts. Whether or not you know fado or any of the artists here, after this stirring musical journey, you are not likely to forget them. 7:10 pm screening meet at the 2nd floor bar NOT the Balcony Bar Photographed by José Luis López-Linares, Eduardo Serra. With Mariza, Caetano Veloso, Camané, Lila Downs. (93 min, Zeitgeist Films)
