Ola! There is a really good language book called Portuguese in 10 Minutes a Day. It is Brazilian Portuguese based and has the basic nitty gritty such as the Alphabet and Numbers, household items, vocabulary flashcards, and also removable stickers that you attach to various items in the house so that way when you go to utilize one of these items, you can reinforce your Portuguese by repeating the item's name in the Portuguese printed on the sticker. I myself speak European Portuguese (eu sou guineense) so can HIGHLY recommend Ponto De Encontro, for both Brazilian and Euro Port learners. It covers EVERYTHING and also differentiates between the two languages by using the respective countries flag above whatever text is being read.

If anyone is interested, I have compiled in MS Word a list of the 300 most commonly used verbs in Portuguese. Really basic format setup like this ===} Falar Speak. I write it in this format and printed them cut them out and pasted the Portuguese word on one side of a 3x5 card and the English equivalent on the other side. Cheap and invaluable flashcards to preactice those must needed verbs required for speaking a language conversationally and also fluently. Shoot me an email and Ill send you the attachment.

Lastly, I made a Portuguese cheat sheet from various books I've read. It's a quick study guide of sorts that Covers: Noun Plurals, Common Prepositions and the Definite/Indefinite Article, Possessive Adjectives, Demonstrative Adjectives, Comparisons of Inequality, Absolute Superlatives, Comparisons of Equality, Conjunctions, Prepositions, Interrogative Words, Forming the Negative, and 6 Tenses of Verb Conjugations for -ar -er and -ir. This has been a life saver as you dont have to thumb through pages of crap to find the meat, I've done it already and decided to make a mini guide of it! As with the verb list, just shoot me an email and Ill send it to you via email also.

Ok, thats my rant! Hopefully I'll meet some of you soon at a Meetup! Ate logo!

Tayler, I agree with you, Portuguese in 10 Minutes a Day and Ponto de Encontro are great books.

Ponto de Encontro is excellent for those students who want to understand the grammar rules. It is one of the only books that bring extensive explanations of verb tenses, how they work, and when they are used. When it comes to exercises, however, I prefer to work with other books. Ponto de Encontro has a good website with exercises and more. You do not have to buy the book to access the online program.

Falar Ler Escrever Português is very good for exercises that use repetition. It does not give you grammatical explanations; it shows you how to do something and then it makes you practice with exercises. This is for Brazilian Portuguese. The CDs are sold separately.

For students who are already conversational, I recommend Colloquial Portuguese of Brazil 2. This book has several dialogues that use everyday informal language. It also brings concise grammar points and you can buy the accompanying CD to listen to the dialogues and practice oral exercises.

Finally, there is Bem-Vindo. I like it a lot, it has several texts and good exercises. It is a very fast book, however. I recommend it for Spanish speakers or intermediate students.

Divirtam-se!
